Studio Notes

What is heritage reclamation?

It is the artisanal process of rescuing 100% cashmere from high-integrity vintage and contemporary luxury garments that are either damaged or unwanted.

Not simply recycling, but rather, carefully restoring pieces of fashion history that were created at a time when quality was the only standard. The resulting long-staple fibres are structurally superior and far more resilient than today’s mass-market alternatives, waiting to continue a new life on your needles.

What makes reclaimed cashmere so unique?

I believe that the joy of fibre art lies in pure freedom of expression and creation, and encourage you to explore all mediums, both old and new.

Reclaimed cashmere often possesses qualities difficult to find in modern mass production such as the use of long-staple fibres and traditional spinning techniques that result in significantly softer, more durable strands.

You are also bypassing the heavy environmental toll and reducing the burden of industrial processing when you choose reclaimed cashmere. The reclamation loop keeps premium materials out of landfills and puts them back into the hands of passionate makers, where they belong.

How do you guarantee the purity and authenticity of reclaimed cashmere?

Authenticity is the heartbeat of Lalitā. I assess every garment before it enters the restoration system, relying on technical testing and professional assessment of the fibre’s “hand” - its unique characteristics such as drape, weight, and bloom.

Selected garments then undergo a meticulous multi-step restoration process specifically formulated for delicate protein fibres.

I prioritize the integrity of the cashmere at every stage, ensuring that each skein arrives to you fresh, soft, and completely revived, ready for your most treasured projects. If a fibre’s purity is ever in question, it doesn’t make it into the collection. It’s my promise that you will receive only the most authentic luxury you expect.

How can I preserve the life of these delicate fibres?

Cashmere thrives with gentle care. I recommend hand-washing in cool water with a mild wool wash, squeezing out excess water with a towel, and laying flat to dry. Store finished pieces folded in a breathable cotton bag or sealed container when not in use. You can view our full care guide here.

Because cashmere is a natural, delicate protein fibre, some pilling is a normal and expected part of its lifecycle, especially in high friction areas. Although Lalitā Reclaimed sources long-staple, resilient cashmere, pilling is typically a sign of the yarn’s softness, not a lack of quality. These tiny pills can be safely and easily removed with a dedicated cashmere brush or electric fabric shaver. With occasional care, your heirloom piece will remain smooth and beautiful for many years to come.
